Autobiographical reading

2010

In my book, I have attempted the elaboration of a system for rereading 20th-century Hungarian autobiographies, by way of putting the emphasis on theoretical considerations. (From the “Death of the Author” to the Resurrection of the Author, Stereotypes in Autobiographical Reading) The major analytical aspects of the Autobiographical Reading focuses on the language based means of the representation of the Self. (Language and Subject, Staging the Self, Inter-Replacing Play of Image and Representation, Relationship between the Narrating and the Narrated Autobiographical Self, Memory and Identity) The choice of this subject matter is justified first of all by the fact that the conditions for the…

The Hungarian writer of the Lost Time : memory and poetical imitation in Krúdy Gyula’s work

2015

Gyula Krúdy’s (1878-1933) oeuvre admittedly represents a peculiar kind of conundrum within the confines of literary modernism in Hungarian literature. While the most significant authors of the early 20th century drew inspiration from Western European literary forms and preferred to distance their works from previous prose traditions, Krúdy’s fiction remained closely linked to those narrative forms inherent to 19th century Hungarian prose. His motive for continuing to use these narrative forms did not stem from a blind desire to follow tradition, but rather originated from a conscious effort to renew and reform the heritage bequeathed upon him by past authors. Thus, the strange dichotomy tha…

The University of Jyväskylä's Hungarian Studies Program celebrated its twentieth anniversary with an international conference, held on March 15, 2011. The conference participants included people from six European countries who not only commended Jyväskylä's Hungarian Studies Program, but took accounts of the history of the main international institutions of Hungarian Studies abroad as well, devoting special attention to the developments in the last two decades after the political transition in Hungary. Reading Ádám Bodor’s Sinistra körzet [‘The Sinistra Zone’] in English

2018

This article focuses on the English translation and reception of a major contemporary Hungarian novel, Ádám Bodor’s The Sinistra Zone. A fairly slim book, The Sinistra Zone was first published in 1992, established Bodor as a major writer and inspired a considerable amount of critical literature in Hungary. The article first gives an overview of the position of The Sinistra Zone in contemporary Hungarian literature and highlights some issues discussed by critics that are relevant for the discussion of the English translation and reception. After reviewing the American reception of the book, Orzóy examines how specific features of Bodor’s prose are rendered in Paul Olchváry’s English translat…

Modernség, progresszió, Ady Endre és az Ady-Rákosi vita : egy konfliktusos eszmetörténeti pozíció természete és következményei

2008

This work can be placed on the borderline of literary history and the history of ideas. It aims to position the famous Hungarian poet of the early 20th century, Endre Ady, on the intellectual map of his age, and to point out his place within the relationships of literary modernity and intellectual-social progressivism; it describes the fixation, form and temporal change of the poet's unique position, and shows the human and intellectual consequences of this position, as it relates to a dispute which lasted for half a year, and only seemingly was of a literary nature. The work consists of three major parts. The first is an overview of the mainly intellectual-ideological aspect of the more …
